Movie Review: Beowulf
My wife and I went with some friends to see Beowulf about a week ago. I only knew one other person who had seen it, and they gave it high marks. But I was a bit skeptical about the 100% animated approach. That is – until I found out you could go see it in 3D! I’ve never seen a movie in 3D before. I’ve been in one of those rides where you don’t actually move but the 3D animation experience makes you feel like you are. After seeing my first 3D movie, I will definitely be looking to do that again. It was fun to see a movie in a different way as it definitely broke the sometimes monotonous experience.
As far as the story, I can’t really speak for how closely it followed what I read in literature. That was like 19 or 20 years ago so I simply don’t remember all the details. But if you’re like me, then you don’t really care about that. I go to movies to be entertained, and that’s exactly what I got with Beowulf. The animations and effects were spectacular. Grendel may be one of the ugliest, most disgusting demons I’ve ever seen. His mom is a true biatch and pretty darn ugly when she’s not in her Angelina Jolie form.
For those of you who don’t know, Beowulf volunteers to slay the demon, Grendel, who has been terrorizing the locals. After killing Grendel, Beowulf is seduced by Grendel’s mother who eventually bears his child. Years later, Beowulf must confront his “son” in an epic battle of man versus dragon.
Literary criticism aside, I highly recommend going to see this movie. It’s extremely entertaining and well worth the price of admission.

Beowulf’s animation was pretty good, though the characters’ movement reminded me a lot of Shrek. I appreciate the fact that this movie gives a pseudo-education in ancient literature (never had to read the book as a child)

We went ahead and bought the movie on DVD when it came out and watched it that night. Gotta say I totally agree with you on the Shrek-like movement. I didn’t really notice that while watching the 3D version, but when you see it in your living room it’s a whole different story. Still a good movie but not nearly as impressive.
